HHMI Investigator and Professor of Neurobiology, Yang Dan, is lead author of an article printed in the British journal Nature describing the discovery of a neural switch that can stimulate nerve cells in the medulla region of the brain and activate REM sleep. The research sheds new light on sleep and dreaming, and could play a role in treating mood disorders and neurological diseases like Alzheimers and Parkinson's.
