Our community sadly lost a pillar on Friday, January 22, 2021, when Nilabh Shastri, PhD, passed away. Nilabh was a Professor at UC Berkeley from 1987–2018 and a cornerstone of the immunology community. He served as the head of MCB’s Immunology and Pathogenesis Division from 2010–2015, was a gifted and dedicated teacher and will be remembered for his kind spirit and generous nature. His most prominent scientific work addressed how T cells, a major component of the immune system, recognize foreign entities like viruses or cancer cells. It is with great sorrow that we share the passing on March 8, 2021, of our colleague and friend Clinton E. Ballou, PhD. Clint was Professor of Biochemistry (1955-1989), Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (1989-1991), and still active in research as a Professor Emeritus until he closed his laboratory in 1995. He led a remarkable and remarkably impactful life, making ground-breaking contributions in several major areas of carbohydrate and polysaccharide, glycolipid, and glycoprotein biochemistry.
