Nilabh Shastri
(1952 — 2021)
Our community sadly lost a pillar on Friday, January 22, 2021, when Nilabh Shastri, PhD, passed away. Nilabh was a Professor at UC Berkeley from 1987–2018 and a cornerstone of the immunology community. He served as the head of MCB’s Immunology and Pathogenesis Division from 2010–2015, was a gifted and dedicated teacher and will be remembered for his kind spirit and generous nature. His most prominent scientific work addressed how T cells, a major component of the immune system, recognize foreign entities like viruses or cancer cells. Clinton Ballou
(1923 — 2021)
It is with great sorrow that we share the passing on March 8, 2021, of our colleague and friend Clinton E. Ballou, PhD. Clint was Professor of Biochemistry (1955-1989), Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (1989-1991), and still active in research as a Professor Emeritus until he closed his laboratory in 1995. He led a remarkable and remarkably impactful life, making ground-breaking contributions in several major areas of carbohydrate and polysaccharide, glycolipid, and glycoprotein biochemistry.
