Professor of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Structural Biology Jennifer Doudna was one of five scientists to receive the Alpert Prize in 2016. This year, the Warren Alpert Foundation Prize recognizes five scientists for their remarkable contributions to the understanding of the CRISPR bacterial defense system and the revolutionary discovery that it can be adapted for genome editing.
Department News
Below are articles from various sources about members of MCB and their research.
New cryo-EM facilities are coming (available to researchers at UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UC Santa Cruz, UCSF and LBNL) that will drastically increase our ability to understand protein structures.
UC Berkeley undergraduate Rachael Acker, who assists with research in MCB Professor Rebecca Heald's Lab, has been named the Pac-12 Women’s Swimming and Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
James Nunez, a graduate student in MCB Professor Jennifer Doudna's Lab, has received the prestigious Weintraub Graduate Student Award. The Harold M. Weintraub Graduate Student Award recognizes outstanding achievement during graduate studies in the biological sciences.
Assistant Professor of Cell and Developmental Biology Gloria Brar, Assistant Professor of Genetics, Genomics and Development Hernan Garcia, and Assistant Professor of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Structural Biology Evan Miller have received 2016 Sloan Fellowships, along with five other UC Berkeley faculty. These fellowships "seek to stimulate fundamental research by early-career scientists and scholars of outstanding promise."
1:00 pm, Saturday February 27, 2016. Join the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology, along with Integrative Biology, and the Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute to celebrate the pioneering contributions of Dr. Marian Diamond to modern neuroscience. This is a free celebration at the new BAMPFA!
Director of QB3 and Professor of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Structural Biology Susan Marqusee, and Associate Professor of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Structural Biology Ahmet Yildiz have received 2016-2017 Miller Professorships. We also congratulate our MCB affiliate, Associate Professor of Plant and Microbial Biology, Arash Komeili, for receiving a Miller Professorship as well! These awards are "dedicated to the encouragement of creative thought and the conduct of research and investigation in the field of pure science."
Assistant Professor of Neurobiology Hillel Adesnik was one of 105 U.S. scientists and engineers that were recipients of the Presidential Early Career Awards this year. This is the "highest honor bestowed by the United States Government on science and engineering professionals in the early stages of their independent research careers."
Niranjan Srinivas, a postdoc in Assistant Professor of Genetics, Genomics and Development Hernan Garcia's Lab, has received a prestigious fellowship from the Damon-Runyon Cancer Research Foundation.
Associate Professor of Neurobiology Dan Feldman explores Spanish neuroscientist Ramón y Cajal’s pioneering drawings of neural networks at a lunchtime talk at the new Berkeley Art Museum & Pacific Film Archive. Feldman’s lunchtime talk is part of BAMPFA’s inaugural exhibition, Architecture of Life.
