The Prostate and Testosterone:
The healthy prostate is an androgen-dependent organóits growth depends on the presence of testosterone.
In the prostate, testosterone is converted to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) by 5-alpha-reductase.
DHT stimulates growth of the prostate.
Notes:
Therefore, the prostate of the male fetus will grow into the fourth month of gestation and then rest until puberty when testosterone is stimulated to be produced by the Leydig cells, giving the prostate substrate to produce DHT. It grows until adulthood and then usually ceases until about age 40 when is begins to grow againóand continues until death.
