Research Interests

I study host-pathogen interactions as a way to understand basic cell biological processes. In particular, I focus on the mechanisms that cytosolic bacteria use to spread directly from cell-to-cell. The infectious bacterium Burkholderia thailandensis does this by inducing cell-cell fusion, a unique mechanism among bacterial pathogens. By studying the molecular mechanisms of pathogen induced cell-cell fusion, I hope to elucidate a key mechanism of pathogenesis, as well as how cell-cell fusion occurs during fertilization, development, cancer, and other biological processes.
