Assistant Professor of Neurobiology Stephan Lammel has been awarded a Whitehall Foundation Fellowship. The Whitehall Foundation supports young scientists at the beginning of their careers and assists scholarly research in vertebrate and invertebrate neurobiology in an effort to better understand behavioral output or brain mechanisms of behavior.

Professor of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Structural Biology Jennifer Doudna was one of five scientists to receive the Alpert Prize in 2016. This year, the Warren Alpert Foundation Prize recognizes five scientists for their remarkable contributions to the understanding of the CRISPR bacterial defense system and the revolutionary discovery that it can be adapted for genome editing.

Assistant Professor of Cell and Developmental Biology Gloria Brar, Assistant Professor of Genetics, Genomics and Development Hernan Garcia, and Assistant Professor of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Structural Biology Evan Miller have received 2016 Sloan Fellowships, along with five other UC Berkeley faculty. These fellowships "seek to stimulate fundamental research by early-career scientists and scholars of outstanding promise."

Director of QB3 and Professor of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Structural Biology Susan Marqusee, and Associate Professor of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Structural Biology Ahmet Yildiz have received 2016-2017 Miller Professorships. We also congratulate our MCB affiliate, Associate Professor of Plant and Microbial Biology, Arash Komeili, for receiving a Miller Professorship as well! These awards are "dedicated to the encouragement of creative thought and the conduct of research and investigation in the field of pure science."

Assistant Professor of Neurobiology Hillel Adesnik was one of 105 U.S. scientists and engineers that were recipients of the Presidential Early Career Awards this year. This is the "highest honor bestowed by the United States Government on science and engineering professionals in the early stages of their independent research careers."
