Saturday Symposium (keep scrolling for Friday Reception directions):
Location: The Valley Life Sciences Building can be found on this map: http://www.berkeley.edu/map/maps/large_map.html in section C3. The building will be unlocked and the major entrances on both sides of the building can be used.
The symposium will be held in room 2040 at the east side of the building (towards the hills). This is a map of the ground floor of VLSB: http://bds.berkeley.edu/sites/bds.berkeley.edu/files/images/vlsb/2ndbw.gif. There will be signs inside directing you to room 2040.
Pre-symposium light refreshments will begin at 9:00am in room 2063. Also, please stop by to pick up your name tag (or have one made) in this room.
BART:
You would take the Pittsburg/Bay Point train and transfer to a Richmond train at the 19th Street or MacArthur station. The cost one-way is $3.70 from the San Francisco Civic Center, Montgomery Street and Embarcadero stations. The trip is approximately a one-half hour. You can get a schedule at www.bart.gov.
Walking:
VLSB is accessible from BART by walking up Center Street, crossing Oxford and taking the paved pedestrian road over the Strawberry Creek bridge and through "squirrel alley." VLSB is will be the second building on the left (LSA is the first building).
Bus:
You can also take the F bus from San Francisco to Berkeley. The Transbay Terminal has been torn down; the Temporary Transbay Terminal has buses picking up on between Beale and Main Street at Howard. The F bus stop is near the intersection of Howard and Beale. You would get off at Center and Shattuck and follow the walking directions above. From San Francisco, you would catch the F bus at the Transbay Temporary Terminal. The trip takes about 40 minutes (depending on traffic eastbound on the Bay Bridge) and costs $4.20 cash (no change given) one way. You can see the weekend schedule at www.actransit.org; looks like the 8:10am bus would get you to Berkeley around 8:45am.
Parking:
Parking is available on campus for a daily flat rate on weekends, for $7-$12 (rates vary) cash (coins and $1 and $5 bills) paid to one of the yellow machine in the garages, lots and along Frank Schlessinger drive (the one on the drive is just above Oxford, so you will want to purchase your ticket first if you plan to park along the drive. There is a small parking lot adjacent to VLSB that is reached by driving along Frank Schlessinger Drive (C1-2) and there is also a ticket machine there. The only entrance to the drive is northbound on Oxford, so anyone coming up University Avenue will need to turn right at Oxford, go down to Allston or Kittredge and make a U-turn to access it.
VLSB is at the end of the automobile accessible road (you will go along the road past the Rec Center on the right, then over a bridge). Another choice is to park in the Genetics garage (B2) underneath the Li Ka Shing Center (which used to be Wellman Hall), next and below to Barker Hall at Oxford and Berkely Way) and walk to VLSB.
Friday Evening Thorner Reunion Reception (by invitation):
The reception is from 6-9 in the Great Hall (to the right if you come in the main entrance). Name tags will be on the table outside the Hall, with some blanks and markers in case one hasn't been printed for you or your guest.
Drinks, hors d'ourves and dessert will be served.
After 9pm, the party moves a few doors down to the Freehouse Restaurant and Brewery at 2700 Bancroft for anyone who is interested.
The Bancroft Hotel is located at 2680 Bancroft Way, between College and Bowditch, approximately across the street from Boalt Hall School of Law.
Parking:
Street Parking: Although the fall semester has ended and students have largely departed, street parking will probably still be tight.
Bancroft Hotel Lot: Limited attendent parking is available in a small lot next door (to the right of the entrance) for $6, however, there will probably be less than a dozen spaces, as they go to hotel guests first.
UC Lots: However, there is the UC Bancroft lot across the street and just a few yards past the Bancroft Hotel, on the north (right side of the street) underneath the athletic field; this is probably your best bet. Parking can be purchased by the hour and the machines accept cash only (coins and $1 and $5 bills), there are 126 spaces.
The largest (262 spaces) UC lot is the Underhill Structure, entrance at Channing Way and Haste Street between College and Bowditch, about 2-1/2 blocks from the Bancroft Hotel.
There is also parking in the MLK Student Union Garage just west of Telegraph and Bancroft which is also about 2-1/2 blocks to the Bancroft Hotel (uphill).
The nearest public lot is on Channing just west of Telegraph Avenue for up to $20 depending on how long you stay, that garage accepts credit and debit cards as well as cash. That is about a five block walk, the last three uphill. You would get to see the Telegraph Avenue craziness, however.
Public Transportation:
BART (www.bart.gov):
Take a Richmond train from San Francisco and get off at the Downtown Berkeley station. You can also take the Pittsburg/Bay Point train and transfer to a Richmond train at the 19th Street or MacArthur station. The cost one-way is $3.70 from the San Francisco Civic Center, Montgomery Street and Embarcadero stations. The trip is approximately a one-half hour.
Walking from BART:
By foot, the Downtown Berkeley BART station is a little over 1 mile away from the Bancroft Hotel, most of it uphill. To reach the hotel from the main exit (the big brown dome), you would turn right out the escalator, turn left at Bancroft and walk up to the hotel.
AC Transit (www.actransit.org):
By bus BART to Bancroft Hotel: Catch a 51B bus at the corner of Allston Way and Shattuck Avenue for $2.10 cash one way. It would take approximately 10 minutes. Get off at College Avenue and Durant and walk one block north and half a block down to get to the Bancroft Hotel. The 51B runs about every ten minutes.
From San Francisco: The F bus runs from San Francisco to Berkeley and you can get off almost across the street from the Bancroft Hotel. From San Francisco, you would catch the F bus at the Temporary Transbay Terminal (the old one has been torn down and will be replaced eventually) which has buses picking up on between Beale and Main Street at Howard. The F bus stop is in the area of the intersection of Howard and Beale. The trip takes about 40 minutes (depending on traffic eastbound on the Bay Bridge) and costs $4.20 one way. The trip will loop around campus in a clockwise circle from Shattuck and Hearst to Bancroft and College.
Getting Back:
Once you are all assembled, you will probably sort out return transporation on your own, but find me (Kathleen) if you need specific directions or help. You can also email me at kparsons@berkeley.edu and I will give you my cellphone number to use if need be.
