BIOLOGY 1AL

REQUIRED TRAINING for LAB INTERNSf

Updated 02/26/2025

All Lab Interns working in the for Biology 1AL must complete and VLSB Safety Training Checklist to document completed trainings to be permitted to work in the lab spaces.

You will need to complete the required trainings and readings as detailed on this page and in the checklist form.

Enter the personal identifying information as requested at the top of the checklist.

Once you have completed everything on the checklist and signed it, deliver it to Erol Kepkep in 2083 VLSB or send and electronic copy to bio1alab@berkeley.edu.

See the instructions below how to complete the requirements on the form.

Download the VSLB Safety Training Checklist here. You can also get a printed copy from Erol Kepkep.

Personnel working in labs (Lab Instructors and Lab Interns) must complete ALL items on the form including the following:

See below for more instructions completing the trianings if you are having trouble.

1. Complete the online EHS 502 Workplace Safety Program training. If that link does not work, go to the UC Learning Center and search for "Workplace Safety".This training takes about 20-25 minutes to complete. See the form for more instructions. Print the completion certificate after doing the training to submit along with the VLSB Safety Training Form.

2. Read the VLSB IIPP (Injury and Illness Protection Program). The IIPP is stated as being for Integrative Biology, but the contents is relevant for MCB personnel as well and is more specifically for the VLSB.

3. Read the VLSB BEP (Building Emergency Plan).

4. Read through the BDS Facilties Primer.

5. Receive a safety orientation specific for the workplace and check of the remaining items.

6. Complete the online UC Laboratory Safety Fundamentals, EHS 101 training. If the link does not work, go to the UC Learning Center and search for "101".This training takes about 1.5 hours to complete. See the form for more instructions.

7. Complete the "Lab Hazard Assessment Tool (LHAT) Training" once you have been added to our LHAT Lab Roster. See more instructions below

8. Read the online component for the Chemical Hygiene Plan, and read the Biology 1AL Lab Classroom Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP). Sections titled "General Laboratory Training" and "Laboratory Walk-through" will be covered in the first lab meeting.

9. Complete the online Hazardous Waste Program Training, EHS 105 training if you wish, but it is not required for Bio 1AL. If the link does not work, go to the UC Learning Center and search for "105". This training takes about 15 minutes to complete.

10. Complete the online Hazardous Materials Spill Response Training, EHS 106 training. If the link does not work, go to the UC Learning Center and search for "106". This training takes about 15-20 minutes to complete.

You must sign a sheet during the first lab meeting stating you have read the CHP.

11. The remaining checkboxes on the sheet will be covered during the safety orientation at the first lab meeting. You must read the lab manual section regarding safety in the lab and building prior to attending the meeting.

Spill clean-up supplies can be found under the sinks in the lab classrooms or ask the staff.

Material Safety Data Sheets are in a binder in each classroom near the instructor's computer.

Information about each hazard to which you will be exposed will be provided in the instructor's meetings prior to your use, and disposal procedures will also be discussed at that time.

Standard Operating Procedures will be provided to be read as needed. At this time, there are none that instructor's are required to read and sign-off.

Shop safety training: not applicable in our case and does not need to be checked.

12. The final step once you have completed all the trainings, filled out the checklist form, and signed the form, you must deliver the form to Erol Kepkep in 2083 VLSB or send and electronic copy to bio1alab@berkeley.edu.

UC Learning Center Trainings:

You will be added to the Environment Health & Safety (EH&S) online Lab Roster Tool for the Biology 1AL Class. Once you have been added to the Lab Roster Tool, you can see your lab membership and training status by accessing it here https://jwas.ehs.berkeley.edu/lab/roster/list.

It's possible you may not be able to access the Lab Roster depending if your listing  could be found in the system to add you (especially if you are not a current campus employee). As you proceed through and start doing the trainings, the system will update, and you may be able to access the roster later.

If you have already completed these trainings for working in another lab, you already meet these requirements.

If you have not done these trainings yet, continue with the following instructions.

If you have gone through the campus HR on-boarding process (and have a valid UC Employee ID number), you may access the UC Learning Center by way of the Blu Portal. Authenticate using your CalNet credentials, select the UC Learning Center link in the left sidebar.

Lab Interns and Volunteers who have not completed the on-boarding process (with Human Resources) and do not have an activate appointment should have access to the training system using their CalNet ID at the following link: http://jwas.ehs.berkeley.edu/lmsi. This link should work for anyone to access the UC Learning Center if access through the Blu Portal is not working.

When you signup to do the trainings, you will be asked to enter some information.

1. For your UCB ID# you will enter your UC Employee ID number if you have one, or you will enter your Student ID number.

2. For PI/Supervisor, you should enter "Erol Kepkep" as I am the supervisor of the Biology 1AL labs.

3. For Department, you should enter "Molecular and Cell Biology".

For more detail on EH&S related training and accessing the UC Learning Center, visit the EH&S training page at: http://ehs.berkeley.edu/training

Please contact the EH&S Training Program at ehstrain@berkeley.edu if you need assistance or have any questions.

Lab Hazard Assessment Tool:

You will also been added to our Biology 1AL Classrooms Lab Hazard Assessment Tool (LHAT) roster.

A. Go to https://ehs.ucop.edu/lhat/, select University of California, Berkeley and click “enter”, and sign in with your CalNet ID.

B. Select a Role (Undergraduate Student for Lab Interns) and select "Molecular and Cell Biology" as the "Group" and save.

C. Select the "Biology 1AL Classrooms Assessment" that should appear in your "Workspace" to view the Lab Hazard Assessment, and read it completely.

D. When you have completed reviewing the hazard assessment, you must Acknowledge the Lab Hazard Assessment by clicking the blue "Acknowledge" button.

E. Do the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Safety Training by clicking the "PPE safety Training" link on the "Next Steps" page. If you have already done the PPE training for another lab, it should show that. NOTE: if you do not see the link for the PPE Safety Training, click the "Acknowledge" button again while on the Next Steps page. If you do not see the "Next Steps" tab in the list on the right, and you are working on a tablet, turn the tablet to portrait orientation and you should see it.

F. You do not need to make an appointment for lab coats and safety glasses/googles because we have enough available and it can take a while to get an appointment. Please submit the form linked in the email message you received to let us know the lab coat size you need to use in lab.

You are required to complete all the above to be permitted to work in the lab classrooms where hazards are present.
