BIOLOGY 1A & 1AL
SPRING SEMESTER 2016
Enrollment is open for both Bio 1A and 1AL. In Phase 1, students may enroll in both courses, or enroll in either Bio 1A or 1AL with the plan to enroll in the other course later. Please remember enrollment in Bio 1A does not guarantee enrollment in Bio 1AL. Therefore, enrolling in Bio 1AL first is the better choice. We are anticipating very high demand for enrollment in the courses for Spring 2016. It will be best for you to enroll early (Phase I) especially in Bio 1AL.
Starting this semester, Biology 1AL lectures will have attendance and participation points awarded for questions answered during lecture via an electronic repsonse system (system to be determined). Attendance during the Monday5:00-6:30 lectures is required for award of these points. More information will be available before the start of classes.
LAB SECTION CONFLICTS WITH NIGHT SCHEDULED EXAMS:
Students should not enroll in a lab section at night if is conflicts with night scheduled exams in other courses. Check the Schedule of Classes Listing. Do not create a conflict. Students will not automatically be permitted to reschedule their lab section during the week of the conflict with an exam.
Students must also ensure they are able to attend the Bio 1A and 1AL exams as make-up exams will not be given. Exam schedules are noted in the Online Schedule of Classes listing, on the bCourses sites, and in the course syllabi. Exam dates and times are subject to change prior to the start of classes, and any changes will be announced.
The waitlist will reamin closed until enrollment fills up and then the waitlists will be activated.
The Bio 1AL waitlist was activated when the course enrollment filled up on 11/3. The best chance to be enrolled for Spring 2016 is to add to the waitlist while also check back frequnetly to check for open seats in other sections. A high waitlist count could result in more seats being opened in the course if it's possible to do so, but there is no guarantee opening more seats can be done.
When adding to the waitlist for the course, you must choose a secondary section (discussion or lab) as well. It is the secondary section which detemines being added to the course from the waitlist as a seat must open in the specific secondary section you select to add to the waitilist. You can switch the secondary section you are waitlisted, and your position on the overall course waitlist will determine your position in the que for the secondary section (i.e. - if you are in position "2" for the course waitlist, you would be in position "1" for any secondary section waitlist you choose except if the student with position "1" is also in that secondary section waitlist and that student would be ahead in line).
The waitlists will be processed automatically (only on weekends during Phase I and II, and nightly during the Adjustment Period), and also manually as we have time to do so. When adding students manually, any open seats will be filled with students on the waitlist for any of the sections meeting at the same time slot.

If you can't get in the discussion or lab section you want, it may be possible to switch later. You should not enroll in a section that conflicts with another class section, an exam scheduled outside normal class time (such as in the evenings, or a mandatory class event .
HOW ENROLLMENT WORKS:
Students must enroll in the "lecture section" of the classes first (both Bio 1A and Bio 1AL have lecture sections). After enrolling in the lecture section of a class, it will be required to choose an available discussion section (with Bio 1A) or lab section (with Bio 1AL). It's not possible to enroll in a discussion section or a lab section without first enrolling in the lecture section of the class.
If you have any questions, you may write to Erol Kepkep, the Bio 1A/1AL Enrollment Coordinator, at bio1a-enrollment@berkeley.edu.
