Transfer Students and Transfer Courses
The MCB Department generally accepts transferable courses from all other colleges and universities. Students hoping to transfer into Berkeley with the intention of declaring MCB should plan to complete all of the lower division prerequisite courses at their transfer institution. If you are admitted without having fully completed a specific series at the transfer institution, you may not have sufficient background to take the remaining equivalent course at Berkeley. Completion of the prerequisites is also necessary before starting upper division coursework. We advise you to postpone your admission to Berkeley until you complete that coursework. This will also allow for more course exploration in the emphases and other subjects.

Make sure you read through the FAQs on the Transfer Admission website.

Transferring from a California Community College

If you will be completing your transfer work at a California community college, please refer to ASSIST for all articulation between your school and Berkeley: http://www.assist.org, (ASSIST) Courses on ASSIST have already been approved by MCB.

We advise you to complete all IGETC (Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum) requirements before you transfer here. Once here, you have limited time in which to complete these requirements in addition to major requirements.

If you are currently attending a community college, visit the Transfer Center for more information about the UC campuses. Find out if a Berkeley admissions representative will be visiting your campus and plan to meet with them.

Transferring from a 4-year or private college

If you are transferring from a four year institution, make sure that the courses you take before you transfer, are equivalent.  Students who need assistance with course articulation should contact the departments directly.  Be prepared to provide both a course description and syllabi for the courses that will be reviewed.  Once courses have been reviewed by the individual departments, they will give you the final decision in writing, which must then be given to the MCB Department.
Whether you are coming from a community college or a four-year institution, it is always a good idea to plan carefully before you transfer. Before you get here, make sure to check with the people who know the facts about which courses will transfer so that you don't waste any time.  Contact the transfer student advisor, Christina Yasi, at: This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
