What is 130A?

MCB 130A - Cell & Systems Biology is a new and improved version of MCB 130, designed to provide a solid intellectual foundation for those who wish to pursue further studies in the life sciences:

  • graduate school
  • medical school
  • other health professions
  • bioengineering
This is a course that will emphasize thinking about and understanding cellular processes, not the memorization of many pathways and facts.

What are we going to teach?

First and foremost, it is a cell biology course. We will highlight important experiments and reinforce concepts that expand on what you have learned in MCB 104.

Why the change and how is it different from MCB 130?

In the future, cell biology will involve more quantitative analysis - we will introduce you to some of these principles.

We will teach systems biology, which emphasizes ways that cell is organized as a whole, and presents more concepts and less about individual pathways.

The teaching style will be similar to MCB 130 but will have the advantage of having a smaller class, providing more individual instruction.
