BIOLOGY 1A & 1AL

SUMMER SESSION

ENROLLMENT INFORMATION

Enrollment Procedure

Students desiring to enroll in Biology 1A and/or 1AL during the Summer Session must meet the prerequisite requirements for the courses. Students not meeting these requirement should not enroll and will be given low priority to remain enrolled if the demand for the courses is above capacity.

Simultaneous Enrollment Requirement:

Most students are required to be enrolled in both Biology 1A and 1AL simultaneously in the same term including Summer Session, and to stay enrolled in both classes for the entire Summer.

Students needing to take only one of the classes because they have already passed an equivalent at another school may request enrollment in Biology 1A or 1AL alone by sending an email message to bio1a-summer-enrollment@berkeley.edu.

Students already declared in Chemical Enginnering, Mechanical Engineering, EECS, or Psychology may be enrolled in Biology 1A without also enrolling in 1AL. Planning to declare the major is not sufficient to receive this exemption automatically.

WARNING: Using this exemption from simultaneous enrollment in Biology 1AL means that you may never be able to take Biology 1AL here at UCB. After taking 1A alone, you would be forfeiting normal priority for enrollment in Biology 1AL during any session (Fall, Spring, or Summer), and you would be considered at lowest priority for enrollment. Even as a Graduating Senior, you would have low priority because you used the exemption and would not need 1AL to graduate.

Lab and Discussion Section Selection:

In the Summer Session classes, students required to be simultaneously enrolled in both classes must enroll in the discussion section that matches the student's lab section (i.e. if choosing lab 325, you must choose discussion 325). If the discussion section selection does not match the lab section, the discussion section will be changed to match the lab section prior to the beginning of classes. This is not done automatically by the TeleBears system. It must be done manually. So, please, select matching sections.

Students only requesting enrollment in one class may select any section initially. If there are issues with matching enrollment for students enrolling in both classes, they will be worked out later.

Students unable to enroll in the matching discussion section to the lab section they have enrolled because that discussion section is full must add to the waiting list for Bio 1A in the matching discussion section instead of enrolling.
