BIOLOGY 1A & 1AL
FALL SEMESTER 2013
Phase I of TeleBears (4/8/13 - 7/7/13): Enrollment is open in both Bio 1A and 1AL.
Phase II of TeleBears (7/9/13 - 8/17/13): Enrollment is open in both Bio 1A and 1AL.
Adjustment Period (8/18/13 - 9/20/13):
8/18 - 8/28: Enrollment in both 1A and 1AL open.
8/29: Simultaneous Enrollment Deadline - must be enrolled in both courses by and after this date if required by major or other requirement.
8/29 - 9/1: Depending on the enrollment status, direct enrollment may be closed and limited to waiting list only.
9/2 - 9/9: Enrollment by Waiting List only - Direct enrollment closed after midnight Friday 9/1.
Attending lab the week of 9/3 - 9/6 is required to be enrolled in Bio 1AL.
9/6: Early Drop Deadline - No drops after midnight Friday Sepember 6th. Enrollment from the waiting list is still possible.
A student enrolled in Biology 1AL is guaranteed to be able to enroll in Biology 1A (as long a discussion section with open seats fits in the student's schedule).
Therefore, a student who desires to be enrolled in both 1A and 1AL should enroll in Biology 1AL as soon as possible during Phase I, and then can enroll in 1A later (although selection of discussion section times may be very limited later). The guarantee for enrollment in 1A is dependant upon the student being able to enroll in an open discussion section seat.
Most students are required to be enrolled in both Biology 1A and 1AL simultaneously in the same term at and after the beginning of classes for the term. This applies to any student required to take both courses for their major or planning to take both courses to meet some other requirement (i.e. medical school application). Students needing to take only one of the classes because they have already passed the other (or an equivalent at another school) may request enrollment in Biology 1A or 1AL alone.
Students currently declared in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, EECS, or Phsychology may be enrolled in Biology 1A without also enrolling in 1AL or may add to only the 1A waiting list (if the 1A enrollment is full).
WARNING: A student using this exemption from simultaneous enrollment in Biology 1AL may never be able to take Biology 1AL here at UCB. After taking 1A alone, the student would be considered at lowest priority for enrollment in future terms including a future Summer Sessions. Even as a graduating Senior, the student would have low priority because the exemption was used and the student would not need 1AL to graduate.
Simultaneous Enrollment Deadline: Students required to be simultaneously enrolled in both Biology 1A and 1AL must be enrolled in both classes by midnight on Wednesday August 28th and any time later. Students failing to meet this requirement will be dropped from the one class they are enrolled even if they are on the waiting list for the other class. Students may enroll in the the courses at any time and in any order as long as they are enrolled in both courses by and after the deadline.
It is not sufficient to be enrolled in one class and on the waiting list for the other class. Students who must be simultaneously enrolled found to be enrolled in one and on the waiting list for the other will be dropped from enrollment in the one class after midnight Wednesday August 28th.
The waiting lists will be activated if/when the course enrollment is close to filling up. If seat remain open, the waiting lists may not be activated.
It's not necessary in the Fall or Spring to have matching lab and discussion sections. They are considered to be independent from each other. Any lab section for 1AL and any discussion section for 1A may be selected.
The only limitation is that the Tuesday morning and afternoon lab sections conflict with the Tuesday morning or afternoon discussions. Students enrolling in the Tuesday morning or afternoon lab sections must avoid creating a conflict with their enrollment in a Bio 1A discussion section.
