BIOLOGY 1A & 1AL

SUMMER SESSION 2008

ENROLLMENT INFORMATION

Updated 6/5/08

Enrollment Status:

Students may only add to the waiting lists for the classes at this time. Students on the waiting lists will be enrolled after confirmation that they have completed the required prerequisites and only if they (in most cases) have added to the waiting lists for both classes and have chosen matching discussion and lab sections (i.e. discussion 101 and lab 101). Students who do not meet the requirements for confirmation will not be enrolled in the classes and will be left on the waiting lists.

Most students have been confirmed and enrolled in the classes. Bio 1AL is completely full at this time. Most seats in Bio 1A have been filled. No additional sections will be opened.

Lab sections are limited to 28 students.

Discussions sections are limited to 30 students.

Do not look at the "Limit" number stated on the schedule of classes. The "Number Enrolled" and "Waitlist" counts are more important. The section limits have been set to zero to block any changes by students.

Enrollment Request Form: Any students on the waiting lists will be considered for enrollment in waiting list position order. Students who add to the #100 waiting list for either or both classes must fill out this form. Students on the waiting lists who have not filled out the Enrollment Request form will not be considered.

Students who must enroll in both 1A and 1AL must be enrolled in 1AL before being considered for enrollment in 1A. Therefore, the waiting list position in 1AL is more important.

Changing Sections:

Section Change Request Form: Section changes cannot be done on TeleBears. Students wanting to change sections must fill out this form. Section changes can only be done if a seat opens in another section, or if there are other students who request complementary section changes. More information is available on the form.

If you have any questions about enrollment, please email Erol Kepkep at bio1a-enrollment@berkeley.edu

Prerequisites

To be enrolled in Biology 1A and/or 1AL, students must have completed Chemistry 1A and Chemistry 3A (or 112A) with a C- or better grade. It is recommended to have taken Chem 3B (or 112B). Equivalent courses from other schools are acceptable, but you must provide documentation of your grades in those courses.

If you do not fulfill the prerequisites, you should not request to be enrolled. You will not be enrolled in the classes if we are unable to confirm your completion of the prerequisite courses. The prerequisite requirement must be met by the start of Summer Session. If you are enrolled in Chem 3A currently, we will wait to confirm you for enrollment in Summer after we are able to confirm your grade in the class you are currently enrolled (sometime in May or early June). As long as you get the C- or better, you will be confirmed for enrollment in Bio 1A/1AL.

Enrollment

Most students must be enrolled in both Biology 1A and 1AL simultaneously. Students adding to the waiting list for Summer 1AL must select a lab section. Students enrolled in 1AL must also enroll in Summer 1A and select the discussion section with the same number as the lab section selected for 1AL.

Note: Students who have selected non-matching discussion and lab sections wihave their discussion section changed to match their lab sections when enrolled, as stated in the Online Schedule of Classes.

The only students who may be permitted to be enrolled in one or the other class alone are those students who have declared majors that do not require 1AL, those students who are repeating one or both of the classes, or those students who have completed coursework at other schools corresponding to 1A or 1AL.

Majors that do not require 1AL are:

Chemical Engineering
Mechanical Engineering
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
Psychology

No matter what major a student may have declared, if their plan is premedical, they must take both 1A and 1AL, and therefore must enroll in both classes concurrently. If you are exempt from 1AL because of your major, but you intend to take both classes, you should not enroll in 1A alone at this time. If you complete 1A without 1AL now, you will have a very hard time being enrolled in 1AL at a later time as you will be given very low priority for enrollment.

Policy for Repeating Enrollment Students - students repeating enrollment in one or both of the classes will not be given lower priority in Summer Session, as they are in the Fall and Spring semesters, if they need the classes for their major requirements. Students needing to repeat both Bio 1A and 1AL must take them simultaneously when enrolling in Summer Session.
