BIOLOGY 1A & 1AL

SUMMER SESSION 2007

ENROLLMENT INFORMATION

How to Switch to a different Discussion/Lab Section

Enrollment Status:

Online enrollment (TeleBears) and enrollment through Summer Sessions has bee closed. We do not use the TeleBears waitlist for these classes. No additional discussion or lab sections will be opened.

Some students may drop or may be dropped if they are not qualified. The only way to enroll (in either 1A and/or 1AL) at this time is to submit an online Enrollment Request Form. The deadline to submit a request is 3:00pm on Monday 6/25.

By new course policy, repeating students will not be given lower priority in Summer Session. Students needing to repeat both Bio 1A and 1AL must take them concurrently when enrolling in Summer Session.

Prerequisites

To be enrolled in Biology 1A and/or 1AL, students must have completed Chemistry 1A and Chemistry 3A (or 112A) with a C- or better grade. It is recommended to have taken or be concurrently enrolled in Chem 3B (or 112B), although concurrent enrollment in another large class in Summer Session is not recommended. Equivalent courses from other schools are acceptable, but you must provide documentation of your grades in those courses.

If you do not fulfill the prerequisites, you should not enroll. You will be dropped from the course at any time if we are unable to confirm your completion of the prerequisite courses.

Enrollment

Most students must be enrolled in both Biology 1A and 1AL concurrently. Students enrolling in Summer 1AL must select a lab section. Students enrolled in 1AL must also enroll in Summer 1A. When enrolling in Summer 1A, it is not possible to select a particular discussion section. Students will be assigned to the numbered discussion section that corresponds to the lab section they have selected to enroll. There is no option to select a different discussion section than the one that corresponds to the lab section.

The only students who may be permitted to enroll in one or the other class alone are those enrolling in 1A who have declared majors that do not require 1AL, those students who are repeating one or both of the classes, or those students who have completed coursework at other schools corresponding to 1A or 1AL.

Majors that do not require 1AL are:

Chemical Engineering
Mechanical Engineering
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
Psychology

No matter what major a student may have declared, if their plan is premedical, they must take both 1A and 1AL, and therefore must enroll in both classes concurrently.

Enrollment Requirements

Students not enrolled in both 1A and 1AL by June 20th will be dropped.

Those Students desiring to be enrolled in Bio 1A alone must request approval by sending an email to bio1a@berkeley.edu by June 20th.

Those Students desiring to be enrolled in Bio 1AL alone must request approval by sending an email to bio1alab@berkeley.edu by June 20th.

Repeating students will not be given lower priority for enrollment in the Summer as they are in Fall and Spring semesters. Summer enrollment is entirely on a first-come-first served basis.

Attendance Requirements

All enrolled students must attend the first lectures, assigned discussion sections and lab sections starting the first week of classes (June 25-29). Students who do not attend will be dropped from the classes. Those students who must be concurrently enrolled in both classes and do not attend one or the other class will be dropped from both classes.
