Prerequisites

Attempting to enroll in Biology 1A or 1AL assumes that you have fulfilled the course prerequisites of Chem 1A (or 4A) and Chem 3A (or 112A). It is recommended to have taken or be concurrently enrolled in Chem 3B (or 112B). You must be at least a Sophomore. If you do not fulfill the prerequisites, you may be dropped from the course at any time.

Enrollment Requirements

If you are enrolled in the classes, you must attend the first lectures and your assigned discussion and lab sections starting the week of 1/22 to keep your place. If you do not attend lectures and your assigned discussion and lab sections, you will lose your place and we will consider you to have dropped the class.

If you are dropped from the one or both of the classes, we may have you officially dropped in Tele-BEARS. If we do not, the classes will remain on your enrolled schedule of classes until you drop them yourself. Even though you will not be in the class, it is your responsibility to ensure that classes you are not attending are dropped from your schedule of classes.

Concurrent Enrollment Requirement

Concurrent enrollment in both Biology 1A and 1AL is required for most students. Exemptions to enroll in only one of the classes require fulfillment of one of the following criteria:

Biology 1A (Lecture)

1. Have a delcared major of Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, or Psychology.
2. Are a repeat student having received a passing grade in Biology 1AL.
3. Have requested an exemption because of previouisly completed coursework from another school, and received approval to enroll in only Biology 1A (send email to bio1a@berkeley.edu).

Biology 1AL (Lab)

1. Are a repeat student having received a passing grade in Biology 1A.
2. Have requested an exemption because of previouisly completed coursework from another school, and received approval to enroll in only Biology 1AL (send email to bio1alab@berkeley.edu).

If you are only enrolled in one of the courses without an approved exemption, you will be dropped.
