While NCBI does occasionally shut down, the chance that it will be down for more than a few minutes is small. It's also possible that the Airbears wireless system could go down or experience a slowdown. If you experience a server crash or a connection interruption or slowdown, this guide provides several options for completing the exercise using alternatives.

Plan B

Be patient.  Look up background information on Wikipedia, or skip to the next section.  By the time you return, the server may very well be working again.

Plan C

Alternative mirror sites that will substitute for some of the sites are linked above.  You will need to pay close attention, as these sites are not exactly the same.  You will need to manually set options from pull down menus, chose the appropriate database to search, and get results in a different output format, but otherwise the information content is the same.

If OMIM is not working, the same information can be found in the primary literature using Pubmed.  This is much more time consuming, and can be supplemented with google searches and Wikipedia.

Entrez has no good substitute.

Plan D

If the web is not available at all during the lab period, these exercises can be completed at a later time.
