On the morning of your visit a student host will greet you and escort you to your first faculty appointment. Faculty appointments last around 45 minutes and can include those faculty whom you tell us you would like to meet with, and MCB faculty who have asked to meet with you. There are usually around 6-7 meetings, depending on the time of your arrival, including a meeting over lunch with a faculty member. Your student host will contact faculty members to arrange your schedule for you.
A list of MCB faculty by division can be found here.
At around 3:30pm you will be escorted to 100 Genetics and Plant Biology Building (GPBB), where a technician and your student host will be on hand to help you set up your talk. Most speakers present their talks using Power Point on their own computers, but let your student host know about additional requirements, if you have them, before your visit. We also encourage you to bring a copy of your talk on a flash drive or CD, just to be safe....
There is a pre-seminar tea held at 3:45pm in the lobby of Koshland Hall, just north of GPBB. Your audience will be on "Berkeley Time", meaning talks usually start 10 minutes after the hour, in this case at 4:10pm. Your talk should last approximately 45 minutes, to leave time for questions following your talk. After questions, a post-seminar reception will be held in the lobby of Koshland Hall, where more people will vie for your attention. When the reception dies down (around 6 pm), your student host and other students will take you to dinner at one of Berkeley's many fabulous restaurants.
*If you have any requests or dietary restrictions, please let your host know prior to your visit.

We encourage speakers to make flight reservations well in advance of your lecture date. We will be unable to reimburse for expensive travel due to lack of planning!
If you arrange and pay for your own flight, please also look for bargain fares. You will be reimbursed upon completion of travel and filing of the MCB Travel Reimbursement form with original receipts.
We also encourage you to make your flight arrangements through Carlson Wagonlit Travel (reservations 1-800-728-4918). Travel arranged in this manner will be billed directly to the department and require no reimbursement. Inform the travel agent that you would like to book travel for a talk sponsored by the Department of MCB and provide your student host's contact information. Your student host will take care of the rest. For full information, please see the University Travel department website.
If you are flying into the Bay Area, the two main airports are the Oakland International Airport and the San Francisco International Airport. To get to the U.C. Berkeley campus from either airport, we recommend using Bayporter Shuttle or a taxi. You may also chose to use the Bay Area Rapid Transit system (BART), which is slightly easier from the SF airport.
We do not reimburse for rental cars. However, we will reimburse for private car mileage, should you decide to drive yourself. If you like this option, please tell your student host so you can get a campus parking permit for the day.
Please remember to save all of your travel receipts
for reimbursement!
The Koshland Committee or your student host will make arrangements for you to stay at the Hotel Durant on the evening of your talk. You will be responsible for arranging transportation from the hotel to your flight the next day. Please let us know if you will require a room at the Durant on the evening before your talk as well.
To process your reimbursements you will need to fill out and sign the MCB Travel Reimbursement Form and send it to your student host, along with original receipts. Limits to reimbursements are listed above under "Travel and Transportation."
