Obligate intracellular parasites, which include viruses as well as certain bacteria and eukaryotes, require the intracellular environment for their growth. These pathogens have lost essential biosynthetic pathways and are metabolically dependent on their host cell for essential nutrients and metabolites. I am interested in uncovering these biosynthetic "holes" in the genome of the obligate intracellular bacterium Rickettsia parkeri to further understand the nature of their dependency on host metabolites. Uncovering these metabolic dependencies may reveal new strategies for inhibiting bacterial growth using host-targeted therapeutics.
