Joel earned his B.S. in Biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin in 2007. During his time at Wisconsin he discovered he had a passion for biological research and decided to pursue a PhD at the University of California Berkeley.

Ever since joining Gary's lab he has been interested in understanding how heterochromatin's many functions are regulated. Figure To address this question he used two orthogonal approaches (IP-MS and genome-wide RNAi screen) to identify novel regulators of heterochromatin structure. He then followed up on some of these hits to determine their affects on heterochromatin function and to discover their molecular mode of action.

In Dec. 2013 he earned a PhD for my research in the Karpen lab and is currently continuing that research as a postdoc in Gary's lab.
