An Undergraduate Summer Research Program
in Sciences and Biotechnology

- The Amgen Scholars Program is a national program to increase research opportunities for students committed to pursuing careers in the sciences.
- This program provides outstanding science undergraduates with research experience and increases participants’ competitiveness as candidates for admission to prestigious graduate and professional institutions.
- Additionally, this program encourages participants to pursue a PhD or MD/PhD degree and research careers in the sciences and biotechnology.
- Applicants from diverse populations and backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
Program Dates and Information
- June 2 – August 8, 2008
(UC and other students on the quarter system are permitted to participate
8 or 9 weeks in the summer program) - Application Deadline: February 1, 2008

Eligibility
- Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- Undergraduate students enrolled in four-year colleges and universities in the U.S., Puerto Rico, and other U.S. Territories
- Sophomores (with 4 quarters or 3 semesters of college experience), juniors, and non-graduating seniors who are returning in the fall to continue their undergraduate studies (Note: Freshmen and students enrolled in community colleges are ineligible)
- Cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher
- Interest in research and the pursuit of a PhD or MD/PhD
- Prior research experience preferred
- No prior participation as an Amgen Scholar (Note: Previous Amgen Scholars are ineligible to participate)
Benefits
- Direct research experience with a UCB faculty member
- A $3,600 stipend
- College course credits (research units)
- Round-trip travel cost
- On-campus housing (room and board)
- Access to UC Berkeley campus facilities
- Participation in the National Amgen Scholars Program Symposium at UCLA
in Los Angeles, CA, July 19-21, 2008 (all expenses paid)

- Submit a Statement of Purpose (included in the on-line application)
- Submit two letters of recommendation
- Submit college Transcript(s); unofficial transcripts are acceptable
- Postmark your supporting documents by February 1, 2008
