The first time you launch Thunderbird 3 after an upgrade, you will be presented with Migration Assistant. Here you can choose to use the classic (Thunderbird 2) Toolbar and Folder View. If you want to make a decision later, you can always go back to Migration Assistant by clicking on Help > Migration Assistant.

If you opt to go with the new Thunderbird 3 user interface, here are some key differences compared to the old version.
- When you double click on an email, it will open it as a new tab instead of a new window.
- The Reply / Forward / Delete toolbar is part of the email preview window.
- Default to Smart Folder view, it may work well for people with multiple email accounts setup in Thunderbird.

Thunderbird 3 brings a totally revamped search function to its users. It will index all of your emails, including the content, for more accurate search results. Utilize the filters on the sidebar may yield what you need even faster.

If you don't search your email very often, you can turn off Global Indexer (under Tools > Options > Advanced tab) to speed up your email experience. Search will be slower however.
