How to deal with SNS security notice

E-mail Print

You may receive a notice from MCB Computer Support with a title similar to;

[SNS #12345] 123.123.123.123 (lsa-549-1.MCB) Compromised Host (or Possibly Compromised Host)

Most of time this is because Campus Network Security has detected a Virus or Malware on the computer that is connected to that IP address. Here are a few steps you can take to resolve this issue and prevent SNS from blocking that IP address from accessing the network.

First, you should determine which is the offending host, from the example above, 123.123.123.123 is the IP address and (lsa-549-1.MCB) is the cableID that is labeled on the physical network jack that you are connected to.

Once you have located the offending computer, close all running softwares you have opened. You will need to perform a full scan with Malwarebytes, a free malware detection software which you can download from http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php. Make sure to run an update before scanning.

When the scan has finished, save the log file to your desktop, click on “Show Results” then “Remove Selected” and reboot your computer.

You will also need to perform a full scan with your Anti-virus software with an updated virus definition, if you do not have a suitable Anti-virus software, you may download a campus sponsored version of Symantec Endpoint Security from http://software.berkeley.edu.

Once you have finished all of the above, please respond to our email and attach the log files from the scans, we will contact SNS and resolve the issue.
